LISTED BUILDING

Grade II Listed Farmhouse

Built in the 17th century, this Grade II listed building suffered extensive fire damage following an electrical fault.

The fire caused considerable structural damage across the first and second floor of the property.

Steeped in history and surrounded by beautiful farmland, the building had maintained may of its original features. Buildzone’s main challenge was to ensure the property stayed true to what was once there.

The fire caused the timbers from the roof structure to collapse therefore, the first task was to make the structure safe and remove all loose debris/fire damaged elements. The roof of the building was in such poor repair that this needed to be completely redesigned and rebuilt. Any original slate was carefully removed and reused. Once this was complete, we began our reinstatement works which involved sourcing bespoke materials but carrying out works using traditional methods.

On the first floor of the listed farmhouse, we replicated Cumbrian Oak wood panelling, which is thought to have originally dated back to the 1600s. Bespoke leaded windows and shutters were restored and installed throughout. Floorboards were replaced on a like for like basis using local/reclaimed timbers where possible. We worked closely with conservation and listed building officers to protect the integrity of the property.

One comment from our client that stuck with us, is how kind, patient and understanding we were during the course of the works. Through years of working in the industry, we understand how difficult these refurbishments can be. No job is the same, however, they are all treated with a combination of compassion and hard work.
